The East Vancouver Community Music School was established for the development of the arts through professional level music instruction and active community involvement.
The Equal Measure Music Festival is an initiative by the EVCMS to celebrate composers who work have been overlooked due to them being women, BIPOC and LGBTQ+. The event including faculty and student ceremonies will showcase these historically excluded composers pieces to public prominence.
“Classical music has been dominated by white male composers for centuries, despite an abundance of brilliant minds and beautiful compositions written by female, BIPOC and LGTBQ+ individuals,” states the press release. With two recitals featuring student performers and an evening faculty concert with pianist Marie Calvert, flutist Ruth Cornish, pianist Holly Duff, cellist Clara Shandler and violinist Sarah Westwick.
